'Egg Head' shot dead

A MAN identified only as 'Egg Head', a suspect in the shooting death of racehorse trainer Donovan Bruce at Caymanas Park two Fridays ago, was killed in a shoot-out with police in Newlands, Portmore, St Catherine, yesterday.

Egg Head was one of three men wanted for alleged participation in Bruce's death at his stable.

Police said yesterday that a foot patrol in Newlands accosted a group of men who opened fire. The fire was returned, resulting in Egg Head being killed.

A St Catherine South police source said Egg Head was a known member of the notorious Umbrella gang, said to be run by its jailed leader.

The gang is considered the most notorious criminal outfit in Portmore. It's leadership and original members were severely weakened by the St Catherine South police's gang squad, led by Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth and Deputy Superintendent Clive Blair.

new recruits

However, police have since discovered that a smaller and younger group of men, known as the Umbrella squad, has been recruited to make up for its diminishing membership.

The gang is also being blamed for the killing of a 90-year-old woman, who was burnt to death when gunmen invaded Hardware Lane and set her one-room house on fire, during a raid last Saturday night.

Meanwhile, two other men implicated in Bruce's killing are being sought.

Bruce's murder fuelled numerous rumours as to why he was killed. Police have since dismissed race-fixing allegations, pointing instead to a dispute between the trainer and the Umbrella gang's leader.

Egg Head numbers among others to have quickly met their end after being allegedly involved in the shooting deaths of persons on the Caymanas Park compound. Among those killed were suspects in the shooting deaths of trainer Howard Phillipps and security supervisor Edward Green in 2004 and 2005, respectively.
