Rasbert Turner, Portmore Star Writer The Portmore Municipal Council (PMC) and the Cannock Chase council out of England are working together to regularise business along the Port Henderson Road, commonly called 'Back Road'. This was revealed at a visioning meeting held at the Portmore Municipal Council on Tuesday. At the function, a number of business and community leaders were informed by Mayor Keith Hinds that the time has come for the 'Back Road' to become a clean business hub for the municipality. A number of persons in attendance claimed that the area can only be normalised when the more than 200 prostitutes are taken off the street. solution Hinds did not relent. He told the gathering that he had been in touch with the police about the problem and was informed that they would be working to get rid of the street walkers. ''While we are glad that there are plans to continue the work of the local planning authorities, several things have to be considered, such as the environmental issues in the municipality,'' reasoned George Lee, former mayor of Portmore. It was agreed that work needs to be done between the Portmore Municipal Council and the environmental authorities in the country. "There needs to be a permanent wall to deal with storm surge along the Port Henderson Road if we are going to regulate it. It has to be in a total way or else it won't last," a resident said. Both councils were twinned in 2004 for better governance, and personnel from Cannock Chase have been working with the PMC to regularise its tax collection. |
