Man claims wounding was an accident

A man appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday accused of wounding his wife and child with a knife.

Charged with wounding with intent, unlawful wounding and malicious destruction of property is Anthony Gilbert of a Corporate Area address.

The accused man, who pleaded guilty to the charges, told the court that he accidentally cut his wife and child with the knife.

Gilbert told the court that there was a dispute between him and his wife. He said that he was using various methods to get her to talk to him but nothing worked. Accepting his failed attempts he asked her for the $10,000 that she had been keeping for him.

He said she refused to give him after repeated requests, so he took up the knife and jumped at her to scare her. The accused man said that she swung her foot at him and the knife accidentally cut her.

The accused man said that he and his wife started to tussle and it was during that time she received another cut in her chest. Gilbert explained to the court that his son was accidentally cut as well.

He further said that because he was ashamed of cutting his wife and child he threw some stones on the windscreen of their car and destroyed the tyres. He said that the tyres have been replaced and the shattered glass will be replaced soon.

Gilbert and the complainant have been together for 18 years and they have been married for 13 years with three children. The complainant, who said that she did not want to continue their relationship, was asked by the resident magistrate to discuss the situation with the probation officers before making a final decision.

The accused man should return to court on August 17, and received bail in the sum of $30,000.
