Taxi driver escapes death

Michael McLean, Star Writer

A St Elizabeth taxi driver is lucky to be alive today after he was kidnapped by two men who took his taxi on Monday.

The taxi driver, 50, of Cuffies Pen in Lacovia in the parish, is now resting at home after he was released from the hospital.

The Constabulary Communica-tion Network officer for St Elizabeth, Constable Carol Panton, reported that about 5 p.m., the taxi driver, who plies the Black River to Santa Cruz route, picked up a group of passengers, including a nurse in Black River, and left for Santa Cruz.

Beat him

Constable Panton said the white Toyota Corolla motor car was proceeding towards Santa Cruz when two men in the car ordered Marner to turn on to the Baptist main road. When he got there, the men ordered him to stop and turn off the vehicle. He refused and the men started to beat him and then tied him up and robbed him of an undetermined sum of cash.

The nurse, who was also in the car, ran. The driver managed to escape and was rescued by residents who rushed him to the Black River Hospital where he was treated and sent home.
