Morant Bay high underestimated first-timers Waterford High school and it was for that reason that they barely won the match and advanced to the first round of TVJ's Schools Challenge Quiz.

In the first segment of the match, Morant Bay high established a four point lead scoring 11 points to Waterford's six. Section two of the match saw both teams trying to get more points with Morant Bay gaining two in the first minute and three points in each of the other two minutes to increase their score to 19 points.

Waterford High also gained two points in the first minute, but they gained four points in the second and three points in the third minute to bring their score to 15 points.

Third round

In the third round, the match was Morant Bay's to win. however, they gave wrong answers for most of the questions they attempted costing them valuable points. Waterford was cautious only answering two questions which increased the team's score to 19 points. Morant Bay ended with two points more at 21 points.

Sanjo Edwards, captain of the Morant Bay team which dropped out in the second round last year, said they could have performed better. "It was a poor one (match). We took the match too lightly," he said.

He said for their next match they will be more focused and will ensure that they execute because they already have a lot of knowledge but they need to deliver.

Kirkland Dixon, captain of the Waterford team, said it was a good first attempt. "It was all right, good for the first time," he said.

Otel Prout, another team member, said that as the minutes ran out he was hoping they would have a chance to answer two more questions and gain the four points more to win the match. "We were praying for time to freeze," he said.

Grateful to teachers

The students said they were especially grateful to teachers, Howard Gayle, Mr Campbell and Mrs Karlene Robinson-Allen, who helped to prepare them for the competition and who also believed in them.
