Black Caps hope 'death' bowlers can contain WI batsmen

wellington, new zealand (cmc)

Unable to contain West Indies in the closing stages of the second one-day international, Black Caps coach Andy Moles wants more from his two 'death' bowlers in the third match which bowls off tomorrow.

In the 28-over-a-side contest in Christchurch, off-spinner Jeetan Patel bowled the penultimate over which cost 14 runs, with the previous over from fast bowler Tim Southee leaking 12 runs.

The loose bowling allowed West Indies to flourish late, gathering the 40 runs required from the last four overs to win the match with a ball to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

"We'll work in the nets in the next couple of days on areas we think we can improve," Moles told local media.

"Where can they learn? We're about 'yes, we want to win every game' but we've got to expose the players so they can learn from situations in a game. They'll both get an opportunity again to fulfil the role that didn't quite come off."

Punished by sarwan

They were punished by a clinical Ramnaresh Sarwan who scored 67 from 65 balls and Denesh Ramdin who smashed 28 from a mere 18 balls in an unbroken sixth wicket stand of 48 that propelled the Windies to their target of 158.

As a result, Patel's five overs cost 39 while Southee went for 38 from his 5.5 overs, breaking the Black Caps' grip on the game.

Moles said the duo had not been as aware as he would have hoped but backed them to learn from the experience.

"The message I said to them is 'If we learn from our mistakes there's nothing wrong with making a mistake,' " Moles said.

"We should have bowled more slower balls instead of going quicker and next time they get into that situation if they can remember how (the last ODI went) and they change to get the job done better, then it would have been a valuable lesson."
