Scores of motorists using the Borobridge to Cave Valley main road in St. Ann, were inconvenienced for several hours yesterday, as residents of Borobridge protested over poor road conditions.
The residents, many of whom are owners of motor vehicles, mounted several road blocks along that thoroughfare to express their disgust with the state of the road, which they complained has been in a dilapidated condition for a number of years, but got worse with recent heavy rains.
Prevailing condition
They told THE STAR that they have been calling on members of parliament Ernest Smith from North West St. Ann and Laurie Broderick from Northern Clarendon in whose constituencies the road is located, to make representation to have the prevailing condition corrected.
"We the residents have been calling on the two MPs to do what they can to have the poor state of the road corrected, but no one is listening to us, while our vehicles are being damaged badly every time we drive here," said Mike, one of the protesters.
He is of the view that the road is not being repaired because it is situated in two constituencies but according to him it is the responsibility of the two JLP MPs to make representation on their behalf.
Monday's demonstration which from all reports started from as early as 6 a.m. saw protesters cutting down huge trees into the roadway. They also used huge rocks and other debris to block the roadway at several points, making it impossible for pedestrians and motorists to go about their business.
It is understood that the Cave Valley police went to clear the road, but had to call for back-up from their colleagues from other stations in St. Ann. It was learnt that the road was eventually cleared just after 1 p.m.
Efforts to speak to the MPs proved futile yesterday.
