Dear Counsellor:
Can you tell me if I was tested for HIV? I went to the clinic because I had a rash on my hands and feet, and the nurse took some blood from me. She told me she was testing it to see if I have syphilis. A few hours later she came back and told me the test was all right. I was asked to see the doctor and all he gave me was an ointment to rub on the affected area. Does that mean that I don't have HIV?
Barry
Dear Barry:
Some people think they are tested for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, when they get routine blood tests. This rarely happens. Talk to your healthcare provider and ask what tests were done. Do not assume the HIV test was done. It is very unlikely that you were tested for HIV at the clinic's visit you described. It is important to know that the HIV test is not usually done without the individual's knowledge and consent.
New boy, new illnessDear Counsellor:
I had sex with a new boyfriend three days ago and now I am having pain from my vagina whenever I urinate. I'm also having a foul smelling discharge. Can you tell me what is wrong?
Worried Lover
Dear Worried Lover:
From what you described, you may be infected with a sexually transmitted infection (STI). You must visit a doctor as soon as possible so that you can be properly diagnosed and treated. In the meantime, you must not have sex. If you do have sex, you stand a chance of infecting your partner and you may also get other STIs. Follow your doctors instructions and remember that if you use a condom every time you have sex, this will greatly reduce your chance of becoming infected with STIs, including HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
