A chance I did not regret

Tanneshia Taylor, STAR Writer

When 24-year-old Tanneshia Taylor entered the teaching profession in 2006, it was somewhat of a chance encounter as her initial career plan steered towards the Business Administration field.

She was not successful in her Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) Mathematics examinations however, and she toyed with the thought of entering the classroom afterwards.

"I don't regret the decision at all, I truly enjoy the teaching profession," Taylor said. "Being able to impart knowledge to my students makes everyday spent in the classroom worthwhile."

Not enough

Young Taylor has been having "worthwhile" days at Frome Technical High School, in Westmoreland where she teaches English Language and English Literature. As if teaching alone is not enough, she is even more overjoyed for the fact that the school is also her alma mater.

"The good thing for me is that I used to attend Frome Technical. Its my former school, so for me, going back there as a teacher is rewarding. Its as if I am giving back to the institution in a very positive way," the teacher noted.

The only challenge Taylor has faced in her classrooms, so far, is coming up with ways to keep her students, particularly the boys, interested in Literatures in English.

"The boys are sometimes different," Taylor chuckled. "I have to sometimes think up activities related to the text that will heighten their interest. In most cases dramatisation helps."

With all being said and done, this teacher sees her students as her "little babies". She noted that they come to her on a daily basis expecting to receive the knowledge they require to excel. And, like a caring mother, she never neglects her responsibility.
