In my own words: 'A night to remember'

Shaggy's date for the Shaggy and Friends concert, Camelia Carter. - Sean Bennett

Camelia Carter, the winner of The STAR's Win a Date with Shaggy competition was so inspired by her experience that she decided to chronicle it with a letter to The STAR. Here are her thoughts.

I had the privilege of being in the company of Jamaica's and some of the world's greatest individuals on the evening of January 3, 2009, on the lawns of King's House.

Shaggy, Bruce, Rik Rok, Usain, Tessanne, Etana, Beres, Da'Ville, Elephant Man, Beenie Man, Macy Gray and so many more. Yep! They were all there at one of the greatest concerts on Earth - and it's not because I was there, but because it's for charity and of course, we all know sharing is caring.

I had won a competition in The STAR, which entitled me to a date with Mr Orville 'Shaggy' Burrell at his 'Shaggy and Friends' concert.

I was overwhelmed to hear I had won, but in a way I thought someone was playing a practical joke on me. It turned out to be a reality. I was ecstatic! I was in for a surprise because even though I had no idea what to expect, it was beyond my wildest expectations. I got so much more than I imagined.

With transportation provided by Jessica Packer and Sharon Burke, I was escorted safely to an event that would leave me with wonderful memories that will remain with me for a lifetime. I felt like Cinderella being escorted to the ball, only I wasn't worried about my ride being turned into a pumpkin or that my slipper would fall off (I was in boots).

I had a ball. I was around so many well-known persons that I got lost keeping up with the names.

My evening started out with dinner and may I add, it was splendid. Who could have thought that little me would ever have dinner with the prime minister himself, Mr Bruce Golding, and his lovely wife. She is quite a nice and very pleasant person.

Fully entertained

I was seated beside Mr Rik Rok and we chatted away like old friends. He kept me laughing all the time. Rik you really rock!

To tell the truth, I had no overwhelming feelings at all except in the beginning when I thought I would have felt out of place, but I felt right at home.

The beginning of my evening was spent in the company of Rik, as Shaggy was busy ensuring that the concert got off to a smooth start. So, Rik kept me fully entertained. Rik you were great and thanks, I really enjoyed your company.

However, after everything was set, I really got my date with Shaggy and it was. … . I am at a loss for words.

He is a charming person. He apologised for having to pass me off on someone else but he ensured that I was okay and enjoying myself. We talked a bit and he is fun to be around. He made me laugh all night.

I had asked for it and it was given to me. I wasn't on a date with Shaggy. Oh no! I was on a date with Mr Orville Burrell and that made me very special as I was given the opportunity to see you as you.

Thank you so much.

I enjoyed my great date. You are indeed a great man and I was indeed in great company. What you are doing for the hospital is more than a miracle. You and your team, especially Ms Burke and Ms Packer, are truly blessed.

They worked really hard to pull off something that you said should have been done in eight months in eight weeks. And, Ms Burke, thanks for those kind words, I really appreciated it.

Nothing is impossible

Of course, I cannot go without thanking the persons who made it happen: The STAR. Keep up the good work! Sash, thanks for making me very comfortable and Dwayne, your hospitality is commendable.

One thing I have learned from all of this is that nothing is impossible. As long as you believe it, you can achieve it and for all you persons who thought that famous persons are different … ummh … sorry to burst your bubble, but they are not.

They are human just like you and me, right Rik? I'm sure his reply would be yes.

My heart has been touched by all the kindness I have received and lasting impressions have been made in my mind.

I will always remember my fairy-tale date, only this time, it was not a fairy tale, it was real. To tell the truth, it was my first real date and it is the best. (Sorry babes, I love you still, but the truth is the truth and I know you will understand.)

Yes! It was truly a night to remember!

Love Lia.
