Stamp out underage 'daggerin'

Last Weekend's main STAR story about a street 'daggering' party for children, in a particular Kingston community, is horrific.

It was reported that, at the party, children were not only allowed to do sexually explicit dances but were encouraged by adults, including women, who provided their bodies for male children to 'stab' at.

For them it was fun. But, for others concerned about the moral degradation of our society, it was a scene from a horror movie.

What was on display was an extremely early initiation into sex in a society where child molestation is rampant and, we suspect, underreported. Given the public nature of the situation, the children probably have aready been introduced to sex through words (including explicit music) and actions.

But, this unashamed, public endorsement and encouragement is another matter entirely, just like there is a difference between a criminal awaiting the cover of darkness to harm others, and one carrying out the act in broad daylight, without fear of repercussion.

This is a matter for the authorities to address quickly. This smacks of preparation for an entire generation of children in this community to indulge in continuous sexual gratification for the satisfaction of adults and themselves. If unchecked, it will have a serious impact, not only on the lives of the child 'daggerers', but also other children with whom they come in contact.
