St Catherine knife man fined $15,000

Spanish Town

A St Catherine man caught with two knives, minutes apart, was fined $15,000 or 30 days hard labour for being in possession of offensive weapons.

The sentence was handed down on Omar Thompson, 20, of Central Village, by Resident Magistrate, Vashti Chatoor, in the Spanish Town RM Court Tuesday.

Investigating Officer, Andre Smith, told the court that on December 19, he was on patrol when he spotted Thompson with a brown-handled knife. He was warned, but five minutes later he was passing the same spot and saw Thompson with another knife.

arming himself

The policeman said his investigation revealed that Thompson and a relative had a dispute and that is why he had armed himself. As a result, he was charged with two counts of possessing an offensive weapon.

Having heard the facts, the RM scolded Thompson that having been given a chance by the police, he allowed himself to be caught a second time. "I think you need to learn some lesson... you must be more responsible," the RM said.

Thompson was fined $5000 or 10 days on the first count and $10,000 or 20 days on the second count. He was not represented when he appeared in court.
