Two men were killed and five other persons injured after the motor vehicle in which they were travelling crashed into a guard rail then burst into flames at the intersection of Highway 2000 and Hill Run Avenue in St Catherine on Monday.
Dead are Gladstone Green, 65, of Reading Avenue, Mount View, Spanish Town, and Clifford Reid, 32, of a Keystone address. Injured are Simon Bryan, 42; Rabiana McKreth, 11; Kemando Lee, 21; Mark Francis, 37, and Paula Gordon, 40, all of St Catherine addresses.
Reports received by the Constabulary Communication Network are that about 9:40 p.m., a green Mitsubishi Pajero registered 8342 FF, driven by Bryan with the seven aboard, was travelling along Highway 2000. On reaching a section of the road, Bryan failed to negotiate a corner to exit on to Hill Run Avenue. He lost control of the vehicle which crashed into the guard rail. The vehicle plunged over a section of the Hill Run overpass, then burst into flames.
All seven sustained multiple injuries but only five managed to escape the burning vehicle; Green and Reid were burnt to death. The police and fire brigade were called and the injured persons taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where they were admitted in serious condition. The burnt bodies were taken to the morgue for post-mortem.
The Spanish Town Traffic Department is investigating.
