The driver of the ill-fated truck that overturned killing 14 people in Portland less than two weeks ago has turned himself in to the police.
Corporal Debbie Douglas-Eliis, Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) liaison officer for Portland, confirmed that the driver, along with his lawyer, surrendered to the Portland police about 2:15 a.m. yesterday morning. Police have been seeking the driver, who is known only as Chris, since December 19.
According to police reports the truck, which was loaded with a variety of agricultural produce, was transporting 21 persons to Coronation Market in Kingston, shortly after 8 p.m. when it stopped and was reversing along the narrow roadway to allow a car to pass. Its left rear wheels went over the precipice. Several persons were reportedly crushed on impact and others were thrown from the vehicle.
Since then, the Government has vowed to help bury those who died and to help the over 50 children, who lost at least one parent in the accident.
