Former England captain Michael Vaughan
LONDON, England, CMC
There has been no recall for former captain Michael Vaughan in a 16-man Test squad named for England's tour of the Caribbean starting in January.
Speculation was rife that selectors would return to the badly out-of-form 34-year-old but Vaughan's name was not among the Test or 15-man one-day international squad announced yesterday.
Predictably, Kevin Pietersen has been retained as captain of the squad, which retains the bulk of the unit which toured India recently.
"Michael Vaughan has not yet had an opportunity to prove his form in order to be considered for selection for the Test side," chairman of selectors, Geoff Miller explained.
"He does, however, remain very much in our thoughts as we continue to plan for the npower Ashes Test series against Australia later this summer.
"He will play a full part in Yorkshire's pre-season programme, which will include a tour to Dubai and we will continue to monitor his form closely once the domestic season begins in April."
Return of Sidebottom
The squad includes uncapped leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who toured India and also sees the return of left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom, who missed that series through injury.
Sidebottom, who hasn't played since the South Africa tour in August, will be joined by James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison in the pace department.
The 20-year old Rashid forms part of a spin trio that includes off-spinner Graeme Swann and left-armer Monty Panesar, all three of whom undertook the India tour.
"We are pleased to welcome Ryan Sidebottom back to both squads now that he is fully recovered from injury," Miller said.
"Adil Rashid was added to the Test squad for the India tour and we have again included him in the party to tour West Indies.
"He is an exciting prospect for the future and his inclusion will enable us to continue to monitor his development closely as well as providing extra competition for places in the spin-bowling department."
Meanwhile, England have called up uncapped Worcestershire wicketkeeper Steven Davies for the ODI squad and have also recalled Dimitri Mascarenhas for the trip.
