Hinds in top form ahead of first-class season

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC

Ryan Hinds tuned up for the regional first-class season with a superb century on Sunday's final day of the latest Arawak Cement Barbados Preparation Series match.

The left-handed Hinds, a former Barbados captain, was 102 not out when the drawn three-day fixture ended at the Pine Basin Ground with the Jason Haynes XI on 325 for nine in reply to 200 all out by Corey Collymore's side.

The series is being used to help Barbados prepare for the regional first-class season, which starts in two and a half weeks.

From an overnight six without loss, the Haynes XI got solid scores from Hinds, Dale Richards and captain Haynes as they easily wiped off the first-innings total by Collymore's side.

The 27-year-old Hinds, who has had sporadic appearances in the last six years for the West Indies, hit 13 fours and one six in an impressive 124-ball innings.

Tidy bowling

The effort completed a fine all-round performance for Hinds, who recorded tidy bowling figures two for 18 off 11 overs with his left-arm spin the previous day.

Opening batsman Richards lashed 12 boundaries in scoring 87 off 139 balls, and Haynes stroked 41 in a 143-run partnership with Hinds.

Kenroy Williams (38) and Jonathan Carter (27) also got useful scores for the Haynes XI.

Bowling for Collymore's team, fast bowler Corey Edwards claimed three for 40, while off-spinner Shane Ramsay (3-53) and pacer Javon Searles (2-65) shared five wickets.

After Friday's opening day was washed out, Collymore's side got a half century from Kevin Stoute (53) to score 200, while pacer Barrington Yearwood and spinner Nikolai Charles combined for eight wickets.

Yearwood, who was on the West Indies Under-19 squad to the 2004 Youth World Cup in Bangladesh, picked up five for 15 off 6.4 overs and leg-spinner Charles bagged three for 58.

Barbados will begin their campaign in the West Indies first-class season on January 9 against Trinidad and Tobago.
