WESTERN BUREAU
The refreshing sound of laughter in Montego Bay, St James, on Sunday night, was delivered through an excellent entertainment package at Pier One dubbed 'Western Comedy Fest', which featured a unique mixture of seasoned and upcoming comedians.
While the scheduled 8 p.m. show began 45 minutes late, early stints from veteran comedians Apache Chief and Sarge had the capacity-filled venue in stitches, which compensated for the late start.
Social commentaries and impersonations of several controversial Jamaican public and musical figures dominated the one-hour stint of the two comedians. However, it was the imitation of former Senior Superintendent of Police Reneto Adams that trapped the crowd in laughter for the greater part of their segment.
So great was their performance that Apache Chief was requested for an encore, at which time he called one of his colleagues on stage to do an imitation of deejay Rodney 'Bounty Killer' Pryce.
Lukewarm
The performance of the 2007 Comedy Buss winner Dwight Samuels was lukewarm and he received a few chuckles for his jokes. His set was short-lived, as the audience grew impatient with his delivery.
Following Samuels' disappointing performance, The Hilarious Granny and Chu Chu offered a comical treat that managed to re-energise the comedy-hungry audience. They even challenged each other in a dancing contest that saw The Hilarious Granny winning the competition after various skilful and fun on-stage antics
Despite the absence of Bobby Smith - popularly known as Inspector Madden of the Royal Palm Estate
television series - local stand-up comedian Leighton Smith had Montegonians eating out of his hands and demanding more of his comical perspective on life even after his segment had ended.
In addition to its line-up of comedians, the over four-hour long comedy treat concluded its hilarious staging with controversial radio talk-show host Dr Kingsley 'Ragashanti' Stewart, who provided his usual provocative commentary.
Western Comedy Fest, which was organised by Jamco Entertainment Enterprise, is a fund-raising vehicle to assist the Howard Cooke Primary School with computers for their lab.
