A man who escaped from police custody was sentenced to 30 days' imprisonment at hard labour when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court last Friday.
Alma Colville, 18, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment at hard labour and suspended for three years for robbery with aggravation.
Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown said all the accused needed was a sharp short stint in prison to help him recognise the importance of staying out of trouble.
Made off with her phone
Allegations in the matter are that the complainant was on board a bus and used her cellular phone to make a call. She was reportedly approached by the accused, who demanded that she hand over the phone to him. She refused and a struggle developed, during which she was cut on the hand. The accused made off with her phone.
The police were alerted and Colville was chased and held. He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital after he told the police that he was feeling ill. While there, he freed himself from their custody and ran off. He was shot and injured in the process.
