THE EDITOR, Sir:
Please give me a small space in your newspaper to shine some light on the disgraceful condition at the Golden Grove cemetery in St Thomas. I am told that the cemetery has been in operation for over 100 years. I am now an old man, but ever since I was a little boy, the cemetery has been without a shed and water supply.
Disregard for the people
The cemetery is laden with over-grown trees and weeds. I see the condition there as a total disregard for the people using the place. It is also a rip-off of the people's hard-earned cash that they pay for use of the disgraceful place, which is right in the centre of the community, on the main road leading to eastern Portland.
I am reminding the people collecting the burial-spot fees there, that there is no excuse for the over-grown trees and weeds at the cemetery, for weed whackers and other weed-cutting tools are available. No longer are we stuck with just an axe and a cutlass to get the job done. So, get started and get rid of the trees and weeds.
As for the water, a National Water Commission pipeline is at the front of the cemetery along the road. The necessary person could submit an application to the commission for water supply and get water to the cemetery.
I am, etc.,
