Reggae band Rootz Underground, along with the organisers of the Trench Town-based Culture Yard, recently hosted a treat for the children in that
community. The project was sponsored by Rockhouse Hotel, Lasco, Wisynco and GraceKennedy Limited.
The Christmas treat, held at the former home of Bob Marley on Wednesday, saw scores of children enjoying themselves and getting exposed to various artistes. Nine-year-old Ramona Barton, who attends the Maxfield Park Primary, told THE STAR that she was having fun. "I feel good to be here because this treat is really nice," she said.
first of many
Stephen Newland, lead vocalist of the Rootz Underground band said he wanted the project to be the very first of many such projects. "Right now, we are calling on all Jamaicans of different communities, the Caribbean and even worldwide to come on board," Newland said.
He added: "I feel that giving to the masses should be free and we are grateful to the sponsors who have come on board to assist us.We just need the volunteerism, if you have it to give, just give. All the communities need help and this is just sparking a little help. It's a community treat and any artiste can volunteer to help."
Culture Yard
Chris Whym-Stone, director of the Culture Yard, added that he was happy that the location, which is a tourist site, was selected as the venue for the treat. "Bob Marley is a selling product and people love this place. I am really happy that Rootz Underground has finally got around to do this project which turned out to be a success."
Members of the community and parents were also pleased with the gesture. One parent said, "I like how they are opening the eyes of the kids, they are getting a lot of exposure, trust me."
The treat ended on a high with performances by the Rootz Underground band. Overall the children were very appreciative.
