Accused car thief gets bail

A man accused of stealing a car after it was involved in an accident, was granted bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Orlando Hall, a 25-year-old chef from Tavern Crescent, is charged with robbery with aggravation, but may have the charge reduced to driving away a motor vehicle without the owner's consent, as the Crown indicated that it did not have enough evidence to prosecute the accused on the robbery charge.

Allegations are that in June 2007, the complainant was driving his vehicle when he became involved in an accident with another vehicle.

The accused, who was a passenger in the other vehicle, allegedly got out of the car with a group of persons, who then took the complainant's vehicle and drove it away.

It is further alleged that the complainant called the police and while the police were on their way to the scene, they saw the accused driving the complainant's car. The car was later found abandoned in Tavern, St Andrew.

Difficult to prosecute

The Crown said that it had no statement from the complainant that identified the accused as the person who drove away the motor vehicle immediately after the accident. As such, it indicated that it would be difficult to prosecute the accused for robbery.

Hall, was granted $30,000 bail with surety. He is to return to court on February 5.
