Woman charged with forgery just wanted to vote

A woman who yesterday told the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court that she forged a national voter's identification card so she could use it to vote, was given three years suspended sentence for the offence.

The accused woman, Daphney Spencer-Blake, was arrested and charged with two counts of forgery and false declaration after police discovered the ID cards at her house recently.

The investigating officer in the matter told The Star that the police were on an operation in St Andrew, when they searched a premises and found two voter identification cards.

The cards reportedly had the accused woman's photograph on them but had different names and dates of birth. One of the cards, the court was told, was issued under the name June Spencer.

Before the sentence was handed down, Spencer-Blake, a household helper from Mount Pleasant, St Andrew, told Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown that she forged the ID so she could vote.
