A Trinidadian man who tried to export ganja from Jamaica was sentenced to three months in prison at hard labour.
Alleyne Robinson pleaded guilty to possession, dealing and taking steps to export ganja when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
Weed to make wine
Robinson told the court that he was not a drug dealer and that he used the weed to make wine, along with Noni juice. He told the court that the Jamaican weed was more potent than what he got in Trinidad, but it was scarce and expensive.
He asked Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown to be lenient with him because he was not a drug dealer.
After listening to Robinson's arguments, RM Brown fined him $7,000, or six months for possession. He was admonished and discharged for dealing in ganja and fined $28,000 or six months for taking steps to export ganja.
In addition, he was sentenced to three months in prison at hard labour. If fines are not paid, the sentences are to run consecutively, meaning he would serve nine months in prison.
