Alleged phone thief gets bail

A man accused of robbing three Holy Trinity High School students of their cellphones, last month, was granted bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Kevin Hall pleaded not guilty to robbery with aggravation and was finally granted bail by Senior Resident Magistrate, Glen Brown, after the accused's attorney made a bail application on his behalf.

Valerie Neita-Robertson, who represents Hall, argued that the complainants identified her client based on clothing he was supposedly wearing. She said she spoke with her client's employer and he confirmed that Hall was at work on the day the incident took place.

Toy gun

Allegations are that on November 22, the three students were at school, about 8:30 a.m., when the man rode a bicycle on to the compound and ordered them to hand over their phones. He allegedly used a knife to rob two of the students.

They made a report to the security guard and, on November 25, one of the girls saw the accused on a bicycle, riding out of the school grounds. Another student, who was also robbed, saw him and identified him as the thief. The police were called and he was arrested and charged. He was found with a toy gun and a machete when he was arrested.

Machete

Robertson noted that her client was outside the gate and was enquiring about coming inside to drop off some lunch money for someone there. She also said the toy gun was part of a nintendo game and he was taking it to play the game. Neita-Robertson further explained that he had the machete with him to take it home and have it sharpened for work.

After listening to her arguments, RM Brown agreed to bail, but with conditions. He said the accused could not got to the school. The man who is from Jones Town, Kingston, was granted $30,000 with surety.
