It seems the Christmas spirit is lost on many Jamaicans. Instead of finding ways to spread joy and cheer, many are thinking of ways to rob and loot and create mayhem.
As we have often heard from the police, this is a time when crime is at a high, scams abound and robberies occur in abundance. Gone, it seems, are the days when people would try to find honest work to earn some extra money for the holidays. Instead, thoughts are centred on how to make fast cash and who to steal from.
Be careful
As we celebrate this year, we have to be extremely careful and cautious. Though we might be in a good mood, we must remember not to let our guard down as now is the time when we will be targeted.
Many are planning to party hearty this holiday season and in the midst of drinking, partying and merrymaking we must be careful to let good sense prevail. Those who are planning to shop must also be reminded to observe basic safety guidelines. We cannot emphasise enough that people must be aware of their surroundings and must keep a close eye on their wallets, purses and other personal effects.
We hope - though quite frankly, it may be impossible - that this year will mark the last year that Jamaica is plagued with such crime. We hope that, whether by miracle or force, the criminals will see the need to change and give decent, law-abiding citizens the chance to live and enjoy life.
