Cops charged with Spragga's son's death get return court date

The two policemen charged with the murder of entertainer Spragga Benz's 17-year-old son appeared in the Home Circuit Court yesterday.

Constables Audley Lawrence and Andre Hare were granted $350,000 bail each with sureties. They are to return to court on January 23.

The case was sent from the Corporate Area Resident Magis-trate's Court yesterday for trial in the Home Circuit Court.

Another policeman, Sergeant Michael Blackwood, who is charged with assault in the same incident, was given a January 8 mention date.

Allegations in the matter are that on August 23, Grant and another man were riding a bicycle downtown Kingston when police stopped them. It is further alleged that Grant pulled a gun and fired shots at the police. The fire was returned and Grant was shot dead.

In the aftermath of the incident, family members, however, refuted this report, staging protests and insisting that the teen was killed in cold blood.

An investigation was subsequently launched and the three policemen were later arrested and charged following a ruling from the Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn.
