A policeman has been sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for abducting a 16-year-old schoolgirl and attempting to rape her.
Constable Dwayne Whyte was sentenced yesterday to a total of 22 years, but the sentences are to run concurrently so he will serve only 10 years.
The complainant testified in the Gun Court that some time in 2006 she was at a bus stop on Gordon Town Road, St Andrew. She said she was on her way to school to sit an examination.
Pointed a gun at her
She was alone at the bus stop when the accused drove up, pointed a gun at her and ordered her into his motor car.
He drove her into the Jacks Hill area of St Andrew where he attempted to rape her. She pretended that her foot was stuck under the front seat and managed to open the door and escaped. She stopped a passing motorist, who gave her a lift.
The Crown also led evidence that the motorist noted the licence number of the motor car from which the girl escaped.
A report was made to the police and investigations led to the arrest of the accused.
In his defence, he said he did not point any gun at the complainant. He said the complainant went with him of her own free will.
Acting Supreme Court Judge Martin Gayle found him guilty of the charges.
