The St Andrew North police are investigating the circumstances under which a 14-year-old boy was fatally stabbed moments after he stopped a fight between two other teenagers on Monday.
Another teen is in custody in connection with the murder.
Crime Chief for the division, Acting Deputy Superintendent, Altermoth 'Parro' Campbell, told THE STAR that the deceased teen, Rahim Nelson, a student of the Papine High School in St Andrew tried to be a peacemaker but was killed.
Slapped in the face
According to DSP Campbell, Nelson was among a group of boys who were playing football in the Castle Heights, St Andrew community, when an altercation developed.
Nelson intervened and stopped the fight. DSP Campbell said while Nelson was on his way home, he was confronted by a 16-year-old who accused him of interfering.
Nelson was reportedly slapped in the face. He tried to defend himself, and a knife was used to stab him in the chest.
Charged with murder
He was rushed to the University Hospital of the West Indies where he died.
The 16-year-old was taken to the police and was charged with murder.
Meanwhile, DSP Campbell added that the teen in custody is suspected to be part of a teenage gang operating in the community.
"None of them are over eighteen...We have about eight names and we will be working to dismantle the gang," DSP Campbell told THE STAR.
