Man may serve Christmas jail time

Tashieka Mair, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU

Four months after he was released from prison, Desmond Stewart of Mount Salem, St James, may be on his way back to spend Christmas behind bars.

Stewart who pleaded guilty to robbery with aggravation and was sentenced to six months in prison in February, found himself before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court just four months after his release.

Leaping from the third floor

The accused, who still bears the scars from injuries he sustained after leaping from the third floor of the court building in February, pleaded guilty to simple larceny. Stewart said he stole a Motorola Razr cellphone valued at $18,000 'for the sake' of his children.

"You honour mi woulda like yu fi give mi a suspended sentence and I promise that I would not present myself back here cause I do this just for the sake of the kids them," he said.

Family afraid

However Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry responded, "I may have to send you to prison for the sake of other people's family who are afraid of being robbed of their property."

She however remanded him until December 15 for her to decide an appropriate sentence

Allegations are that on November 19, the complainant was standing next to her delivery truck near Church Street and St Claver's Avenue, when the accused went into her truck and stole her Motorola cellular phone. She raised an alarm and he ran. A policeman on patrol called out to Stewart, who ran. The police gave chase and Stewart was held.
