Host Baby Cham gave away money during his stint on stage at the Asylum Night Club Anniversary Party, held at Mas Camp, Oxford Road, New Kingston last Saturday. - Winston Sill
In the beginning Saturday night's well supported Asylum's 11th anniversary party, where Mas Camp on Oxford Road was transformed into a huge open-air version of the club, sizzled with giveaways, brief live performances and sound system selections.
In the end it fizzled going up to 5:00 a.m. yesterday to a combination of a reduced volume, on police instructions, and a light drizzle, on the instructions of a higher power. Stone Love's Geefus sent away the remainder of a large crowd which had diminished significantly as the sound system was turned down without them seeing the 'big guns' they had been waiting for, among them Mavado.
Abbreviated clothing
There had been a lot of Mavado from the sound system, though, along with Kartel, as Stone Love, Bloodline, Code Red and the Asylum deejays kept the crowd, dominated visually by hot ladies in abbreviated clothing, rocking.
And there was the smashing world premiere of Shaggy's Bad Man No Cry music video, directed by Jay Will. The sight of selector Sky Juice's stomach heaving as he puffed down the road after being nearly caught with the 'don's' woman, Usain Bolt among those on screen watching him sprint past, tore the house down and the conclusion seemed to be that it 'sell of'.
D'Angel, Renato Adams, Josey Wales and Danny Champaignie, Mavado and Bounty Killer are among those who appear in the video and many cast members, including former television host Amelia 'Milk' Sewell, came up with Shaggy after the world premiere.
Naturally, Shaggy did a couple songs, the ladies squealing for Strength of a Woman and Angel, as they did before him when Baby Cham took things their way. Ironically, though, by far Cham's strongest lyric of the night, his opening commentary on Cash Plus and politics which concluded "a de wrong set a people de shotta dem a kill" did not get an emphatic response.
Much effect
Among the other performers in the earlier going were I-Octane, Fantan Mojah, Anthony B (whose Tease Har went over very well) and Cutty Corn, with Chino, Laden and Konshens among those not having much effect in the closing segment.
The giveaways, hosted mostly by Ragashanti and Cham also tossing out the cash, were 'mad', $10,000 and Digicel phones the main prizes. So a call was sent out for a confirmed 'man tief' who has had to jump the wall to escape her 'mate', Latty claiming the prize for someone who has taken a 's—m' inside Asylum.
And one young man came up to claim the prize for a man who has had sex for 969 seconds. He proclaimed that "de gal c— though", to which Ragashanti said "yu mus did a do suppen before".
The crowd roared.
