MISS RUTH (right) getting the better of BRUCEONTHELOOSE at Caymanas Park on October 18. - file
PERCY HUSSEY's unbeaten filly, MISS RUTH, gunning for the second leg of the three-race million-dollar Supreme Ventures Two-Year-Old Series, faces an improved-looking BRUCEONTHELOOSE in tomorrow's Pick-3 Super Challenge trophy at 1400 metres.
MISS RUTH staved off Philip Feanny-trained BRUCEONTHELOOSE at 1200 metres in the October 18 Cash Pot trophy.
The filly left the gate like a bullet in the Cash Pot Trophy, blinding BRUCEONTHELOOSE with speed down the backstretch and turned for home with a three-length lead, which the colt reduced inside the final furlong but weakened after chasing torrid splits.
Rushed by Griffiths
BRUCEONTHELOOSE, who was racing for the second time, after a maiden win in September, was caught flat by the speedy filly and was rushed by Winston Griffiths leaving the three-pole.
MISS RUTH was more experienced with three wins under her girth. However, Feanny's runner has stepped up his game at exercise, working like a winner, six furlongs in 1:13.2 last week Tuesday morning.
In addition, both horses' final workouts on Monday saw BRUCEONTHELOOSE clocking 1:08.2 for five and a half-furlong, the last five in 1:00.3, whereas MISS RUTH was noticeably slower in 1:08.3 and 1:01.3.
However, the flying filly was easy that morning and will be ready to rev it up a notch on the colt tomorrow.
Of all the seven-furlong exercise spins for tomorrow's rematch, MISS RUTH was most impressive with 1:29.2 last week Tuesday, another easy workout, after blazing 59.4 the previous Wednesday.
Panamanian jockey Dick Cardenas has good hands down the backstretch and will be aboard MISS RUTH, replacing Shane Ellis, who guided her to her three wins.
The veteran Griffiths and BRUCEONTHELOOSE would have learnt a few things about MISS RUTH last month and will be trying to unsettle her.
Tough call
However, that's a tough call as MISS RUTH's pace is a big one, which could cause BRUCEONTHELOOSE to again go too fast too early. When they met last month, MISS RUTH was actually edging away in mid-track after the colt came with his challenge to get within a length and three-quarter.
The Hussey-Cardenas combination looks good in Division Two of the Sunnyside Stakes with the two-year-old debutant REGENCY, who clocked 1:00.0 from the gate Monday morning.
Track Price Plus Pick-6 players should add the Hussey double to GIVEITTOMEBABY in Division One of the Sunnyside Stakes; GOOD COMPANY among $270,000 claimers in the sixth at a mile; THE REAL FURY among non-winners-of-two in the eighth and MISS EILEEN hunting a double in the ninth at 1100 metres.
GIVEITTOMEBABY lost narrowly to ST BESS on debut at 1000 metres straight and should go all the way in the fifth. GOOD COMPANY should be good enough to put away $270,000 claimers and THE REAL FURY should sit off the pace and pounce on rivals at a mile.
Close all bets with MISS EILEEN, who is up in class but won convincingly enough at 1300 metres for a repeat win a furlong shorter. In addition, she still looks sharp at exercise, 34.4, last week Wednesday morning.
