Docta Bird shows how to do his Gangalee dance. - Dwayne McLeod
With another hit dance under his wings, dancer Docta Bird is ready to soar to new heights.
Born David Lemmie, the 24-year-old was recently granted a United States visa and work permit and is already billed to make major appearances in the country, thanks to the recognition he has been getting from his 'Gangalee' dance.
You might have heard dancehall group Voicemail make reference to the dance in their song, Nuh Linga and Sweep: "Docta Bird don't yu have a dance weh name Gangalee, everybody mek wi do di dance Gangalee..."
Docta Bird says this is just a reflection of the hard work that he has been putting in for the past five years.
"Di visa is a sign of hard work... It show seh you a work and show seh yu in demand but mi nuh done, I've been creating dances and mi naw go eva stop," a confident and determined Docta Bird told THE STAR recently.
Promising for his career
Dance moves such as the 'Jag', 'Wacky Step', 'Gangsta Rock', 'Mystic', 'Top Speed', 'New York New York' and the self-titled 'Docta Bird' composed by the somewhat-lanky dancer, were all well received in the dancehall and also got their fair share of recognition in various dance tunes.
However, his latest hit move, Gangalee looks very promising for his career.
"Mi bus wid New York New York but a Gangalee really a push mi rite ya," He explained, before noting that he was granted the US Visa just three months after creating the dance (in August), despite being off the dance scene for a month after falling victim to a troubled appendix.
Now, according to him, he has been getting calls from interested persons in the United States, Canada, and England.
He will be one of the featured dancers at Dance-a-Rama which will be held in Fort Lauderdale, Miami on December 13.
When asked about his future plans, Docta Bird says he simply aims to continue creating dance moves as there is no limit to what he can accomplish.
"My plans is just to create more dance cause di sky is di limit," he said, after which he spoke of a new move, 'Gi Mi Way', which he will be promoting.
