Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser is set to add a new dimension to her sprinting career as she sets her sights on winning the gold medal in the 200m at next year's World Championships in Berlin, Germany.
"I am confident in my ability and I know that I can do it and it is just for me to go out there and do it. I am always looking for ways to expand myself," said Fraser, after receiving an endorsement deal from Digicel at the Courtleigh hotel, yesterday.
Working very hard
"I have been working very hard towards it and my preparations have been going well. I hope I can continue to stay injury-free and continue to do my best," said Fraser, who is a member of the famed MVP track club.
Frazer stunned the world at the Beijing Olympics in August, when she out-sprinted countrywomen Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart to take the gold medal in 10.78 seconds. She will join Olympic triple gold medallist and World Athlete of the Year, Usain Bolt, as Digicel ambassadors for the next four years.
She finished fourth in the women's 200m final at this year's National Athletics Championships in a personal best of 22.15 seconds, behind winner Veronica Campbell's 21.94 seconds.
Natural progression
Wayne Miller, head of marketing at Digicel, said the signing of Fraser was a natural progression in his company's comprehensive sports development programme. "It goes without saying that we at Digicel are very proud of Shelly-Ann, not only in light of her achievements in track and field over a relatively short space of time, but also for the determination, grace and humility that she showed in getting to the Olympic podium," said Miller.
"She truly has endeared herself to Jamaicans and to sports fans across the globe. We are delighted to welcome her into Jamaica's biggest family," Miller added.
Fraser is set to participate in a number of Digicel promotional activities such as advertising and marketing campaigns and personal appearances. In addition, the sprinter will also receive an incentive bonus each time she breaks a record, be it a personal record, local record, Olympic or World record.
The monetary value of the deal inked with Digicel was not disclosed.
