CAC Christmas shopping tips

As shoppers prepare for the busy Christmas season which is almost upon us, the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) is urging consumers to make their safety a priority and to shop wisely.

The CAC recently issued a release providing tips to guide consumers throughout the festive season.

The CAC is advising consumers to be aware of their surroundings, hold on to wallets and purses, park in safe, well lit areas and double check with store clerks if all IDs and credit cards have been returned before leaving. Consumers are also urged to visit ATMs during the day.

Appropriate age

Shoppers purchasing toys are advised to make sure that the toys they buy are age appropriate, are not decorated with lead paint and do not have sharp, loose points and small parts.

Those purchasing electrical items should make sure they bear the Universal Certification ( Underwriters Laboratories: the International Standard for Safety). All electronic equipment should be tested in the store before they are paid for and consumers must get all warranties in writing.

During the holiday season, more meat than usual is purchased.

Consumers are advised to check for an expiration date, examine and test the temperature and look for signs which could indicate that the meat was stored in a poorly functioning refrigerator.

Those planning to eat out during the holidays should ensure that the environment is clean and that the food preparation area is close and visible from the serving area.
