Susan Simes, the host of CVM Television's 'Susan', is set to take home another Caribbean Population Award, formerly known as the Caribbean Media Awards, this Friday, November 28, at a ceremony to be held in Suriname.
In 2006, Simes won the Gold Award for Leadership in Television reporting for her two-part series titled Drug Trafficking.
Formerly the Caribbean Media Awards, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) awards was rebranded for the 2008 competition and is now known as the Caribbean Population Awards.
UNFPA invites journalists from the English and Dutch speaking Caribbean to submit high-quality work on any population-related issue, published during October 1, 2007 - August 12, 2008.
Pursue her dreams
Areas of focus include population dynamics, such as migration ageing, sexual and reproductive health including family planning and safe motherhood and gender equality and equity.
Simes has submitted two entries - a show that was done on Violence Against Women and another titled Ice Créme, a two-part story of a Jamaican woman who left Jamaica at a young age for the United States of America to join her mother for a better way of life and to pursue her dreams of becoming a rapper. Her dreams were dashed, and she fell on hard times. However, she managed to turn her life around.
Simber Productions has confirmed that Simes, who many regard as Jamaica's Oprah Winfrey, leaves the island later this week for Suriname, but was unable to provide much more information.
A spokesperson said that while they know an award will be received they have not been made aware of which entry has won and in what category.
The actual selection of winners is made by a panel of judges from across the Caribbean. The judges will select three winners each (Platinum, Gold and Silver awardees) from print, radio and television.
The UNFPA is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity.
Nationwide News Network's 'This Morning', hosted by Emily Crooks and Naomi Francis, will also take home an award come Friday. The show is produced by Yolande Gyles-Levy.
