Yesterday, as Jackass scanned through The Sunday Gleaner, he bucked up a really heartbreaking story in the Auto section. Now you know that a story in that particular part of the paper has to be really good to hold Jackass' attention, because we deal with four hoof and hamper, no airbag and no E10.

But this one really moved Jackass.

Intelligent to helpless

It was about a young woman who was in a car crash, which changed her life from an intelligent, lively, beautiful person into someone who is totally helpless, cannot speak and gets aggressive at times when she is being taken care of. That in itself really gets to Jackass, but what made it really, really terrible was the way the accident happened and what has happened to the driver.

And what has happened to him? Compared to her, nothing at all. The story said that he has recovered to lead a normal life. And how did the accident happen?

Overtaking traffic

They went to watch racing at Dover in St Ann and, coming back, he overtook a line of traffic and slammed into a truck. He was driving a turbo Starlet. The truck had stopped to try avoid the accident. Stopped, it could not swing left, it could not swing right. if the truck's driver had been able to reverse at high speed to avoid the impact, chances are he would have.

He could not, hence the young woman's present condition.

The world is not level at all because she had absolutely no control over what happened to her and the person who caused it has lived to crash another day. Jackass has lost count of the number of times he has heard about terrible accidents where the people who suffer are those who had absolutely nothing to do with causing the accident, from pedestrians to passengers in the car that initiated the impact or one that was hit .

Few scratches

So many times the driver who caused the crash gets away with a few scratches, if that much, to go drink a liquor with his or her friends and keep on enjoying life, maybe to go crash another day.

Jackass does not want anyone to be mangled or killed in a car crash, but if so, it should be the careless driver in cases where the accident could have been avoided.

And in the story Jackass read, it is not only the young lady's life which has been affected, It is her entire family's. They now live to take care of her, including one sister who has put off going to university.

There was absolutely no mention of the young man who drove her to a wreck and although Jackass would love to think that he is a part of taking care of her financially and physically, somehow he doubts it.
