A 45-year-old subcontractor of Tradewinds Citrus Limited, was remanded when he appeared in the Linstead Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday to answer to fraud charges.

Terrence Grant, of Linstead, St Catherine was remanded after pleading guilty.

More than $2 million

The investigating officer told the court that Grant, who was responsible for getting workers for the company, fleeced his employers of more than $2 million.

The court was told that Grant, whose duty included logging the workers' daily tasks, put the names of former employees on the payroll and collected the money .

The court further learnt that while the money amounted to $2 million, only $100,000 has been accounted for so far.

It was revealed that Grant's scheme came to light in January this year when a former employee went to the company to collect her severance pay.

She was reportedly told that the system showed she was still employed to the company.

The police were subsequently called in and the contractor was charged. He pleaded guilty and will return to court on December 17 for sentencing.
