What is wrong with Jamaica

Dear Pastor,

We must all remember that we are one family and that parents are not the only ones who should care for their children, teach them, protect them from harm and show them how to live well with their neighbour.

I heard one caller to a radio programme say that he would welcome back (Reneto) Adams. I do not agree with this suggestion and doubt the effectiveness of the police force. The prophecy is already being fulfilled and there is no getting around it.

Our men should stop running off and leaving their children to live careless lives. They should stop trying to kill those same children, who could be their illegitimate offsprings. These men should stay and help support these children, who are wantonly running around because they do not know the love of a father.

G.W., Washington D.C., USA

Dear G.W.,

Many people regret the day Reneto Adams was removed from front-line duties. He has had wide support. On the other hand, there are those who were against him. It cannot be denied, however, that he was a good crime fighter. So, if you were one who did not support him, that is alright because more people were for him than against him.

I wish him well in his retirement. But, he still has much to offer to Jamaica. I say that because it is time for each of us to put aside our differences and give the police our full support. There are those in the force who are untrustworthy but there are others, who are doing their very best to uphold the law. Police work is one of the most stressful jobs in the world.

Concerning men, who have many children and are not supporting them, I have often said these men should be taken to court and made to do their part. If they fail to support their children, they should be put in prison. These men do not know anything about love and no one can be forced to give love - whether to children, mothers or children's mothers. And, no government can legislate love.

Nevertheless, we can appeal to our men to be more responsible and not go around having casual sex without preparing for the consequences. A lot of men impregnate as many women as possible and brag about the number of children they have fathered. What our women need to do is protect themselves from these oftentimes unwanted pregnancies and from the men too. Many of these men are liars and can 'con sweetie out of a baby's mouth'.
