Harry Dog's last bark - Cops kill wanted man in Portland

Gareth Davis Sr, Star Writer

The life of one of Jamaica's most wanted men was snuffed out yesterday at Black Hill, Portland, while two of his counterparts are on the run.

Linval 'Harry Dog' Powell was shot dead during a joint operation between the Area 2 and the Portland police.

The Constabulary Communication Network's liaison officer for Portland, Corporal Dwayne Campbell, said about 4 p.m., during the operation, three men emerged from a house and shot at the police.

Suffering from gunshot wounds

"The fire was returned and when the shooting subsided, Powell was found suffering from gunshot wounds," he said. "A home-made handgun was found clutched in his right hand. The other two men fled and a manhunt is on for them. Powell was pronounced dead at the Port Antonio Hospital."

Corporal Campbell said Powell, who hails from Brook Valley, Duhaney Park, Kingston 20, was on the police's most-wanted list for almost a year and was a prime suspect in the murder of Corporal Dave Daley, who was shot dead in Brook Valley last December.

Powell is the second wanted man killed by police in Portland since January. Last month, lawmen killed Oliver McDermott, 35, in Manchioneal.

McDermott, from Bounty Hall, Trelawny, was on that parish's most-wanted list. A firearm was taken from him. Corporal Campbell warned criminals that Portland is not safe for them.

"I am appealing to residents to continue providing the police with valuable, need-to-know information, to maintain and preserve the peace of this parish, which criminal elements are seeking to derail," he said.
