Miss Kitty, Star Writer
Words can't express how elated I am that it happened for real real - that Barack Obama won!
It's been six days since his historical achievement and the world is still in awe and I am especially happy because if him neva win I'd be writing my column from a hospital bed unda drip!
Unique kind of his time
Many are happy because a black man will finally be in the white house but for many like myself, Barack Obama has transcended just being a black man. He is black, intelligent, inspirational and a unique kind of his time.
When presidents and prime ministers from all over the world can be showering praises instead of making bomb threats, it is definitely a cause to celebrate.
With that said, I still worry about the somewhat unrealistic pedestal that many have put him on and as such the unrealistic expectations that many have in thinking that he is the 'cure for the world'.
People should understand that Obama is a human being and is prone to faults and flaws like the rest of us.
Not a black president
He is not a black president, he is a president that happens to be black and will not be able to wave a magic wand and make all ills go away.
His victory does not signify an end to world suffering nor does it mean that he can right all the wrongs in the US let alone the world any time soon.
Inspire people
If anything, his will should inspire people from all across the world to achieve and attain whatever they set their minds to.
Even if you are not interested in politics and even if his policies will not immediately or directly affect Jamaica, we should take a page out of his book to know that once you persist then you can achieve.
It doesn't matter your background, once you want it bad enough you can work hard and reach your goal and desist from harbouring a parasitic mindset.
Freeloaders
Some freeloaders think that this is an opportunity for them to get a handout since is a black man in power but dem have a nex guess coming!
Now is the time dem need fi get up, stop fin' excuse and go wuk.
Now that Obama has done it there is no excuse why it cannot be done. It's not about being the next president but being the best at whatever you put your mind to.
Be it a plumber, an executive, or just an admirable human being reach for the 'Obama' inside you and soar to new heights.
I wish the day will come in Jamaica when our political landscape and culture can demonstrate the maturity that was exhibited by the Democrats and Republicans because though they were creative in pointing out the flaws in each other - nobody neva did a kill nobody fi nuh party and both Blue and Red mingled and coexisted. A Democrat could talk to a Republican and try to convince them otherwise and nuh war neva bruk. They voted on issues and not just because of where they lived and it is time that Jamaicans actually look into the manifesto of those who want our vote and not just vote because yu family a vote dat way from yu bawn.
It's important that we discipline ourselves and strive for greatness and when God si seh yuh do yu bes' him will do di res', Barack Obama to di worl!
