TOMORROW'sSuperstakes at Caymanas Park is set to be a brother-sister match race between Derby winner ALSAFRA and her big half-brother, defending Superstakes champion MAJOR MAYER.
Both horses are from trainers with small strings, Michael McIntosh conditioning MAJOR MAYER and Fitznahum Williams turning out ALSAFRA in the 10-horse field, hunting the lion's share of the $5m purse.
Back-to-form six-year-old AD INFINITUM and four-year-old RUM TALK, winner of last year's 2000 Guineas and St. Leger, are also hopefuls for the weight-for-age 10-furlong event.
However, the brother and sister duo represent the best of their respective age groups, MAJOR MAYER the top older horse, at age five, and ALSAFRA the flashy three-year-old star filly with Triple Crown honours, trouncing the colt ROYAL IMAGE into submission.
Despite stepping up in class to take on Grade One runner for the first time, ALSAFRA has enough class and pace to beat the boys once again, as she hunts her sixth straight victory.
Since winning last year's Super-stakes, MAJOR MAYER has been sparingly raced, winning twice from five starts but also lost two distance races, running the circuit on which he will face ALSAFRA, who dominated the three-year-old classics on the round course.
Easy win
Everything points to an ALSAFRA win as she returned from her Triple Crown campaign with a ridiculously easy win among open allowance horses, clocking a lightning-fast 1:30.4 for 1500 metres on September 27.
MAJOR MAYER stamped his authority over AD INFINITUM on September 13 at 1800 metres, carrying 60.5 kilos, beating the subsequent Governor General's Stakes winner by a length and a half.
Sitting level at 57.0 kilos, MAJOR MAYER should have AD INFINITUM's ticket after allowing 13 lb in his convincing victory.
Whereas he used speed and pace to stop AD INFINITUM, MAJOR MAYER will find his little sister a tougher cookie.
Both horses have similar running styles, close to or on the lead, but ALSAFRA is far more proven at 10 furlongs.
Back in August, after stopping the top imported horse, CHADMAN, at a mile, MAJOR MAYER returned to flop in the 2000-metre Prime Minister's Stakes.
Revisiting MAJOR MAYER's Superstakes win last year, he beat an over-the-hill MIRACLE MAN by a half-length.
In addition, he was only another length clear of overnight allowance runner GOOD COMPANY, who, it was thought, at the time, ran a big race for third but has not won a race since.
It should be a two-horse race from the gate with ALSAFRA and MAJOR MAYER running how they know best - from in front.
Class will tell from the three-pole where ALSAFRA has the speed, mid-race pace and stamina to run rivals into the ground.
Her 2:09.2 for the St. Leger looked slow but she was extremely easy down the backstretch and entering the lane, Brian Harding looking over his shoulders for the deceased (no pun intended) ROYAL IMAGE.
Break at the scale
With 52.0 kilos, getting a break at the scale because of her age and sex, the flying filly should peel from the field leaving the three-pole and it should be a matter of how far she wins from there.
MAJOR MAYER is a tough customer and will try taking her out of her game plan. However, she doesn't quit and it will be Russian roulette on the lead, a scenario which trainers Philip Feanny and Anthony Nunes are hoping to work in their favour with RUM TALK and AD INFINITUM.
Feanny's RUM TALK has glowing exercise reports but relishes a blinding pace up front to catch rivals in the stretch run, whereas AD INFINITUM, will be closer and appears the most likely to upset the top two if they burn out themselves on the lead.
In the other feature races on the 13-race card, CALL OF THE WILD has looked vastly improved since administered lasix, slamming rivals in a fast time at 1000 metres straight. She is nicely bred and should make it two straight in the 1300-metre Juvenile Sprint for two-year-olds.
Take GOOD CITIZEN in the Imported Mile over topweight CHADMAN, who's too heavy to stave off rivals with 60.5 kilos.
In the Caribbean Sprint, stick with the filly OUTSTANDING, whose 1:04.4 for 1100 metres on last should take care of the hot ante-post favourite AWHOFAH, who does not like matching speed in the lead.
