Unbeaten Waterhouse registered their biggest win of the season when they schooled new boys Meadhaven United 3-1 in a lone rescheduled Digicel Premier League (DPL) match at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium yesterday.
Striker Jermaine Anderson continued to prove himself a valuable preseason signing, as he shocked the visitors with a first-minute goal, his third in four games. Taking cue, fellow forward Deveron Clarke opened his account for the season with a double in the 33rd and 35th minutes.
Consecutive goals
Perhaps still stunned by the early deficit, the Meadhaven defence allowed Clarke to slip in unmarked before slotting past goalkeeper Andrew Gibson from six yards out. The forward got his second in similar
fashion, beating Gibson and a Meadhaven defender to a low powerfully struck Irvino English-cross before turning it into the net.
Meadhaven United's leading goal-getter, Keammar Daley, got his team briefly back on track with a well-taken free kick in the 37th minute. The shot, struck 20 yards away from goal, beat Waterhouse goalkeeper Richard McCallum at full stretch. The forward was only inches away from getting an identical result, when he tested the goalkeeper with another free kick from similar distance, but this time saw the injury time-effort denied by the frame.
"We had several opportunities to score today, and when you are playing against a team with the experience of Waterhouse you have to make those count," said Meadhaven coach Alrick Clarke.
"Our defending really let us down today and we played very poorly for a good spell of the first half," he added.
Waterhouse coach Wayne Fairclough, who saw his team join Harbour View at the top of the league, was happy for the win but had his concerns.
"The guys put out a lot of effort here today and I am happy for the win but there are still a number of things that we need to work on," he said.
"Hats off to Meadhaven, though, I think they came out here and played really well, and being such a youthful bunch they have a lot of potential," he added. In another rescheduled game today, Boys' Town will travel to St Elizabeth Technical High School where they face Reno at 4 p.m.
