Former national youth forward Christopher Waugh scored eight goals to guide Wolmer's Boys to 9-0 win over home team Mona High, as action continued yesterday in the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup schoolboy football competition.
In a one-sided affair, Waugh, who was a member of Jamaica's Under-17 team that narrowly missed qualification for the FIFA Under-17 Youth World Cup under the guidance of the late David 'Wagga' Hunt, moved his tally to 11 this season. The Heroes Circle-based school got their other goal from Ateba Morgan.
Wolmer's, who are locked in a ding-dong battle for Group C honours with Jamaica College (JC), moved to 17 points, the same as JC whose matchup against Denham Town at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex was aborted after the home team failed to bring their identification cards.
Wolmer's lead JC by virtue of having a better goal difference.
Meanwhile, St Andrew Technical (STATHS), Bridgeport High and Kingston College (KC) became the first teams to qualify for the second round.
STATHS, yet to lose a match this season, moved to a group-topping 19 points in Group F, following a 1-0 win over Edith Dalton James, while KC, who trail by a point, dismissed Kingston High 5-0 on a double from Rohan Roye and a goal each from Rasheed Malcolm, Miguel Gordon and Arsenio Walker.
Group honours
In Group D, where there is a battle for group honours between Bridgeport and Eltham High, the former moved to 19 points after a 3-2 triumph over St Jago, while Eltham, who are now a point away from qualifying, moved to 17, after crushing Cumberland 6-0. The group's other game between José Marti and Innswood at José Marti ended 1-0 in the visiting team's favour.
At Bumper Hall, the in-form STATHS were led to victory on a 31st minute strike by Odane Ellison. In what was their sixth win in seven matches, with the other being a draw, STATHS dominated for the most part with slick control and passing and in the end were denied a bigger margin of victory thanks to some fine goalkeeping from Waterhouse youth player Rushane Campbell.
"I am not satisfied with the number of goals we scored, but I am satisfied with the result as we have now officially qualified for the second round," said a reflective Keith Nichol, coach of STATHS.
Nichol's opposite number, Omar Williams, said: "I think the Under-17 programme is 'mashing up' the high-school Manning Cup programme as we have had to be rounding up players and throwing them into the deep, instead of building a proper
programme."
