Christopher Ramsey will not be hungry for the next 30 days. The Corporate Area resident was given a chance to get one month's worth of free meals when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Ramsey received the sentence after he said hunger caused him to steal four
chickens. Ramsey was charged with simple larceny and malicious destruction of property. He pleaded guilty to the charges.
The court was told that a Caribbean Broilers truck transporting chickens was near Spanish Town Road when Ramsey hopped on to the truck and stole four chickens. He also destroyed a chicken cage in the process. The clerk of the court added that Ramsey was a repeat offender, but this time, a security guard was on the truck to accost him.
When Ramsey was asked
to explain why he stole the chickens, his replied: "I was hungry, Your Honour, and I was going to cook them. I did not destroy the cage. I saw it with the chickens hanging out and I stole the chickens."
In handing down a sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown said: "I'm providing you with some food for the next 30 days. Just go to prison and you won't be hungry."
