Fresh from their 9-1 mauling of Balaclava, St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) moved into second place in Zone E of the ISSA /Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition after they came away with an impressive 3-0 win over arch-rivals Munro College on Saturday.
STETHS are now on 12 points from five games, one point behind zone leaders Lacovia who beat the Santa Cruz-based team 2-1 on September 22. Munro are in third spot on 10 points.
Marksman Deshawn Brown, Mikhail Ebanks and Denmark Gillings got the goals for the Andrew Edwards-coached STETHS.
Brown opened the scoring in the ninth minute after a Munro defender gave the ball away just outside the 18-yard box. Ebanks ran on to a rebound off the Munro goalkeeper, Deidre Samms, to score on the stroke of half-time and Gillings completed the scoring with a powerful grounder after receiving a long pass from Ebanks in the 79th minute.
The 17-year-old Brown could easily have scored his third hat-trick after missing some close goal scoring opportunities, including an empty goal. He has scored in every game so far this season and his latest strike brings his tally to 13 goals.
Coach Edwards was very happy for the win and satisfied with his team's performance.
"It was very important for us to win this game because we were third in the group," he said.
Coach of Munro, Hopeton Gilchrist, attributed his team's loss to weaknesses in his defence.
"I think we lost the game in the first 10 minutes based on the fact that we weren't defending properly and following basic instruction and hence STETHS got an early goal. That's where we lost it," coach Gilchrist said.
