A man accused of being part of a group which held up and robbed a security guard of $200,000 as she left a bank was denied bail in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court last Friday.
Alroy Davis, 23, a carver from Providence Heights in St James, is facing a charge of robbery with aggravation, but is denying the allegations outlined in court, linking him to the crime. Davis was remanded after Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry said she needed a copy of his police record.
Despite Davis' insistence that he only had previous charges for ganja possession and housebreaking, RM Henry was convinced that he may have had other cases and wanted to be certain before making a decision on bail. He is scheduled to return to court on October 6.
Cash taken
The court heard that on August 22, the guard went into a bank on Barnett Street in Montego Bay, where she changed a cheque valued at $200,000. Upon leaving the bank with the money in an envelope, she was approached by three men, including the accused, who took the cash from her.
The trio then ran in the direction of the Montego Bay Boys' and Girls' Club with the complainant in pursuit. The two other men then ran in the direction of Barnett Lane, while a co-worker of the complainant held Davis and subsequently handed him over to the police.
He allegedly told the police that he was not the only one involved.
The court was informed that Davis' two accomplices were recently held and is to face an identification parade.
Attorney-at-law Max Cooke, who applied for bail on Davis' behalf, told the court that his client denies any involvement in the robbery or making any confessions under caution.
