MIDFIELDER Omar Campbell yesterday sent champions Portmore United two points clear of Harbour View atop the Digicel Premier League table with a stunning 39th minute goal at Arnett Gardens.

Campbell's spectacular 30-yard shot, from the right side of midfield, slammed off the inside of goalkeeper Joel Messam's right post and flew into goal, handing Portmore a 1-0 win at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex, sentencing Arnett to a horrible start, two losses from as many games.

Angry Arnett fans, already upset following Sunday's stoppage-time 1-0 loss to neighbours Boys' Town, started streaming out of the venue from the 80th minute, as their side desperately tried to find the equaliser against the Premiership champions.

Biggest movers

Portmore, who started the afternoon as one of four teams on three points after beating promoted Rivoli 2-0 on Sunday, are now sole leaders on six ahead of Harbour View, who share four points with Boys' Town, Sporting Central and Waterhouse.

Harbour View were only good for a 0-0 draw at St Georges but remain second on goal difference ahead of Sporting Central, who are third on goals scored after their 2-2 draw with promoted Meadhaven at Drewsland.

Waterhouse were the biggest movers of the afternoon, jumping from seventh, as Jermaine 'Tuffy' Anderson repaid his transfer fee with his second goals in as many games, nodding in a 34th minute cross from the left for a 1-0 win at promoted Rivoli.

Reno drew 0-0 with Tivoli Gardens at St Elizabeth Technical High School, keeping last season's runners-up one point ahead of them in the standings, eighth on two points.

In the late game at Jarrett Park, Village United and Boys' Town ended 1-1. Village led off Troy Smith's 52nd minute penalty before Peter Keyes scored his second goal in as many games when he found the back of the net in the 64th minute.

CROWD STUNNED

At Arnett Gardens, Portmore stunned the home crowd before half-time and stubbornly held their lead against the Junglists, who came out roaring in the second half.

Second-half substitute Shane Edwards' sliding attempt went to Horace Howell 10 yards on the right side of the box but the midfielder sent his shot soaring past the far post.

Portmore responded in the 61st minute when Steven Morrissey hit the crossbar. Kevin Wilson, clearly Arnett's best attacker, tried his best to unravel Portmore's stubborn defence before coach Linval Dixon sent in Damion Williams to shut down midfield in the 72nd minute.

Dixon afterwards praised Campbell and his unbeaten team for a job well done.

"It's a wonderful start," he said. "We came here wanting three points and got a beautiful goal from Omar Campbell. It was a good performance by the guys," he added.

Arnett's Jerome Waite also lauded Campbell's rocket shot.

"You have to give credit to that goal," he said. "It was spectacular. We created a few chances but did not put them away. The team did not play badly."
