Powell wins in Poland

Powell won in 9.89 seconds - ap

szczecin, poland (ap)

Asafa Powell failed to challenge Usain Bolt's world record yesterday, winning the 100 metres at Pedro's Cup in 9.89 seconds.

Powell dominated the field in Szczecin, but fell far short of his fellow Jamaican's 9.69 mark, set at the Beijing Olympics.

American Mike Rodgers finished second, in 10.23, while Andrew Hinds of Barbados was third with a time of 10.41.

A year ago, Powell set a world record of 9.74 seconds at the Rieti Grand Prix in Italy. He has since been eclipsed by Bolt, who stormed on to the world scene earlier this year.

In other events, Pawel Czapiewski of Poland won the men's 800 metres in one minute, 46.75 seconds, upsetting Olympic champion Wilfred Bungei of Kenya, who finished second in 1:47.34.

In the shot put, Olympic silver medallist Christian Cantwell of the United States beat Beijing gold medallist Tomasz Majewski of Poland. Cantwell won with a throw of 20.92 metres, just ahead of Majewski's best throw of 20.90.
