A student accused of raping a 13-year-old girl was granted $50,000 bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old accused pleaded not guilty to charges of abduction and rape. Allegations are that in March, the complainant went to a shop and the accused pulled her away and took her somewhere and had sex with her without her consent.
On another occasion, the accused allegedly had sex with the complainant at her home.
However, the accused's attorney argued that no report of the alleged rape was made until a month and a half after the incidents, when the complainnant did not have her menses.
He also said that the second sexual encounter occurred at the complainant's uncle's home in a bedroom where there were two beds. He said while the accused and complainant were in one of the beds, the complainant's aunt and cousin were sleeping in the other bed.
After listening to the allegations, Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown granted the accused bail and ordered his fingerprints be taken. A mention date of October 28 was also set for the matter.
