JPS to answer disgruntled customers

Jamaica Public Service customers will soon have answers concerning the high electricity bills which were issued recently.

In a release yesterday, the Consumer Advisory Committee on Utilities (CACU) said it had written to JPS President, Damion Obliglio, requesting an explanation of the circumstances surrounding the extended billing cycles and the suspension of meter reading over the same period.

The CACU is an independent group acting on behalf of consumers to find answers relating to any utility bill concerns. It liaise with the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR). It is a company that lobbies and advocates in order to hear from both consumers and the utility com-panies. The organisation meets monthly with the OUR which does not exercise any control over it.

The CACU wrote to the JPS honcho about the billing issue which continues to be the primary grievance of JPS customers. The CACU recommends that the JPS immediately address the technical glitch which caused the problem. It said this would ensure that there is no recurrence of the problem.

The CACU added that the company's meter-reading programme must be fine-tuned in such a way that it supports and produces actual readings on a monthly basis, irrespective of planned national events, such as public holidays.

The CACU also advised customers to familiarise them-selves with the components of their electricity bills. The lobby group promised to keep the public informed of developments as they occur. It asked that consumers exercise proper judgement and social order in the exercise of their rights.
